In Chinese, a short word after a verb can tell us the result: finish, understand, find, see, or do something well. Learn five useful patterns for everyday speech.

01
Verb + result: two parts work together
A result complement follows the verb and tells you what the action achieved. Compare 听 (listen) with 听懂 (hear and understand).
VERB
听
tīng · listen
RESULT
懂
dǒng · understand
COMPLETED
了
le · completed
Verb + result complement (+ 了 when appropriate)
Understand
Wǒ tīngdǒng le.
I understood what I heard.
Finish
Tā chīwán fàn le.
He has finished eating.
Find
Wǒ zhǎodào yàoshi le.
I found the keys.
See
Nǐ kànjiàn nà zhī māo le ma?
Did you see that cat?
💡 Some very common results: 完 (finish), 懂 (understand), 到 (reach/find), 见 (perceive/see), 好 (finish well or get ready).
02
Negate a result that did not happen
If you tried an action but did not achieve the result, use 没(有) + verb + result complement. Do not use completed-action 了 in this simple negative pattern.
SUBJECT + 没
我没
wǒ méi · I didn’t
VERB
听
tīng · listen
RESULT
懂
dǒng · understand
没(有) + verb + result: the result did not occur
Did not understand
Wǒ méi tīngdǒng.
I didn’t understand what I heard.
Did not finish
Wǒ méi xiěwán zuòyè.
I didn’t finish my homework.
Did not find
Tā méi zhǎodào yàoshi.
He didn’t find the keys.
Ready / done well
Fàn zuòhǎo le.
The meal is ready.
💡 Result and ability are different ideas: 我没听懂 = I did not understand this time; 我听不懂 = I cannot understand it (G10).
03
Action vs. result
The complement adds the outcome—something the basic verb alone does not guarantee.
Listened to the recording
Wǒ tīng le lùyīn.
I listened to the recording.
Listened and understood
Wǒ tīngdǒng le lùyīn.
I understood the recording.
Searching
Wǒ zhǎo yàoshi.
I look for the keys.
Finding successfully
Wǒ zhǎodào yàoshi le.
I found the keys.
04
Common mistakes to avoid
✗ Result should follow verb
Wǒ dǒng tīng le.
The order is wrong for “I understood what I heard.”
✓ Verb + result
Wǒ tīngdǒng le.
I understood what I heard.
✗ No completed-action 了 in this negative
Wǒ méi zhǎodào yàoshi le.
Not the simple way to say “I didn’t find the keys.”
Wǒ méi zhǎodào yàoshi.
I didn’t find the keys.
