01

The basic pattern

Good news! Many simple Mandarin sentences follow the same order as English:

SUBJECT · Who?
我
wǒ · I
VERB · Do what?
喝
hē · drink
OBJECT · What?
茶
chá · tea
Subject + Verb + Object (S + V + O)
Put it together
我喝茶。
Wǒ hē chá.
I drink tea.
Sherry's tip 💡 Chinese verbs don't change to match the subject like English verbs do. 我喝茶 (I drink tea) and 他喝茶 (He drinks tea) both use 喝.

This is a starting pattern for simple sentences—not a rule for every Chinese sentence. Some sentences don't need an object.

Make your sentences useful

Once you know the basic pattern, you can add time, negatives, and questions. Here's a beginner-friendly introduction.

🕒 Say when: add time before the verb
我今天喝咖啡。
Wǒ jīntiān hē kāfēi.
I drink coffee today.
Subject + time + verb + object is a common pattern.
🚫 Say “not”: put 不 before the verb
他不喝咖啡。
Tā bù hē kāfēi.
He doesn't drink coffee.
不 (bù) comes before 喝 (hē). We'll learn 不 vs. 没 in another lesson.
❓ Ask a yes/no question: add 吗 at the end
你喜欢音乐吗?
Nǐ xǐhuan yīnyuè ma?
Do you like music?
Keep the statement's word order; add 吗 (ma) at the end.
Remember: An English sentence can put time in different places, but in ordinary Chinese statements, time often appears before the verb: 我今天学中文。 (Wǒ jīntiān xué Zhōngwén.)
